The issue will be discussed further at weekly meetings over the next 6 weeks and a presentation is scheduled for Public Feedback on Mon 17 Nov 2008 A BACKGROUND TO SPIT BRIDGE PROBLEM The current Spit Bridge Mosman is a Bascule (Opening) Bridge that was built in 1958. The Spit Bridge is one of two main Transport Arteries from the Northern Beaches into Sydney and North Sydney. One problem is that when the bridge opens to allow boats to move up and down Middle Harbour it causes traffic congestion. This congestion cause a considerable cost in fuel and time for many drivers if they are not familiar with the opening times There have been plans to 1 widen the bridge ($115 M) - althought this was a 2006 Election Promise yet 2007 the project to widen the Bridge was scrapped by the newly elected State Government 2 have a higher level bridge ($200M) or 3 build a Tunnel ($ 1Billion) with a toll around $ 10.00 per car Under the Liberal Askin Government the Spit bridge was originally going to be a higher-level bridge like the Roseville Bridge (built 1976) and connect to the Warringah Freeway. However when the Labour Wran Government (1975-1986) was elected on a "No Freeways" Policy to replace the Liberal Askins Government(1965-1975) no further work has taken place on a Northern Beaches Freeway. B BACKGROUND TO SAN-TRANSPORT PROPOSAL WPR prepared a drawing for discussion by the Sustainability Action Network Mosman [SAN-2088] of A a proposed Spit Tunnel for boats so no need to raise Bridge B a light Rail system from the Spit Bridge to North Sydney Oval C a light Rail system from Warringah Mall to Balgowlah The meeting thanked WPR for his excellent work on the concept and his diagram which will be scanned into the computer if possible for comment C ISSUES FOR FURTHER CONSIDERATION 1 Boat Tunnel at Spit - can it be built without disrupting traffic? 2 Will it allow Bridge to be sealed, widened and a light rail built? 3 Can a Light rail run along the Middle Harbour Foreshore to North Sydney ? 4 Where to position Light Rail Stations ? 5 Will car-parks have to be built by Stations ? 6 Will mini-buses run from Military Rd Cremorne/Mosman to Light Rail System 7 How will Light Rail run to Warringah Mall ?
